US moves towards open access for academic reseach

We had similar progress from the UK government last year, now the US government has taken steps to make publicly funded research (currently only accessible after paying around $30 a paper, sometimes a lot more) freely available.

Widely reported in the media, the US government says that all federally funded research results must be made available for free online.

It sounded great, but then I read on and was disappointed to see that there will be a suggested time embargo of 12 months – not nearly so disruptive – and not particularly helpful to libraries on tight budgets either. Interestingly, Nature, in it’s Editorial seems to feel the same way.

One step forward, two steps back for open access? Maybe, but the signs are there that it’s on its way.

The same could be said for Spring. Happy St. David’s Day!
